I believe that the church of Christ is placed on this Earth to evangelize the lost and to make disciples through the proclamation of the Gospel and the consistent preaching of God’s Word. The Apostle Paul stated in his letter to the church in Colosse, “We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ” (Col. 1:28).
Every church is filled with gifted men and women who are to be developing and exercising their gifts for the purpose of building up the body of Christ.  However in every area of service, giftedness should not be the sole criteria for serving in specific ministries, but  rather godly character.   Giftedness without godliness leads to disaster.  Hence the church leaders are responsible to lead by being godly examples, so that we may train others to serve with “…love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Tim. 1:5). Paul’s admonition  to Timothy should be taken to heart for every leader, “Let no one look down on your youthfulness,  but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe”(1 Tim. 4:12).
It is also the responsibility of the present leadership to equip the saints for the work of service.  This means that we train men and women and children to evangelize, to study the Bible, to pray, to teach, to care and minister to others in the body, “…to a mature man…”(Eph. 4:13)
